What Is Plasma Cutting?

Plasma cutting is a thermal cutting process designed to produce 2-dimensional profiles out of a workpiece made from a conductive material. Contrary to popular belief, plasma fusion is useful for creating complex cuts and parts, especially well-suited for curves and circles.

Complex shape-cutting is achieved by generating high-temperature plasma and melting through the conductive workpiece while a drive system moves the plasma torch in 2-dimension, tracing out the required shape.

Here's how a plasma cutter works:

Electrically Conductive Gas:

A plasma cutter uses an electrically conductive gas, such as compressed air or nitrogen, forced through a small nozzle to create a high-temperature plasma arc.

Ionization and High Temperatures:

The electricity ionizes the gas, creating a plasma arc reaching temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit/16649 degree celsius, melting through metal easily.

Material Cutting:

The intense heat melts the metal, and the high-velocity gas blows away the molten material, allowing for clean and precise cuts.

Cutting Speed and Quality:

The speed of the cutter, gas flow rate, and power output determine the cutting speed and quality, making plasma cutters efficient for metal cutting.
